KROMET, Sweden

Kromet is a mixed-use development located along the riverfront in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city. The project represents a landmark in contemporary timber construction, combining architectural ambition with advanced structural engineering.

Rising to a height of 83.1 meters, Kromet is designed to become the tallest timber building in Sweden and one of the tallest wooden structures worldwide. The high-rise typology is achieved through a fully integrated structural system that maximizes the performance of engineered wood.

The building envelope is conceived as a transparent glazed façade that wraps a structural grid of timber beams and columns. This system expresses the load-bearing structure while ensuring daylight penetration and visual continuity. Integrated planter boxes within the balconies introduce greenery into the façade, reinforcing the architectural concept inspired by the form of a tree.

The primary structural elements — beams and columns — are realized in glulam, while floors and walls are constructed using cross-laminated timber (CLT). This combination ensures structural stability, efficiency, and reduced embodied carbon compared to conventional construction systems.

With a total gross floor area of approximately 37,500 square meters, the project accommodates a diverse mix of residential and functional uses, including condominiums, rental apartments, student housing, co-living units, offices, an auditorium, and spaces for cultural activities.

Kromet demonstrates how high-rise timber construction can integrate structural innovation, façade design, and sustainable performance into a cohesive and buildable solution.
